Tsukiji Morning

Updated: Oct 5

Old Tokyo, within walking distance of Ginza.

We begin at your hotel at 8:00, and within half an hour we are standing somewhere that has barely noticed the last hundred years, let alone the last ten. This is Tsukiji: close enough to Ginza to reach on foot, and far enough from it to feel like a different city entirely.

We start at Tsukiji Hongan-ji, a temple unlike any other in Tokyo. Its pale stone hall, completed in 1934, borrows nothing from the Chinese-influenced style most Japanese temples share; instead it draws directly on the temples of India, an argument made in stone about where Buddhism truly began. If the building draws you in, we can step inside together for a few minutes. If not, there is a smaller pleasure waiting outside: look closely at the eaves and the stairways, and you will find lions, elephants, peacocks, and even a cow tucked into the carvings, left there by an architect who never lost his fondness for animals.

From the temple we walk into the outer market, still a working neighborhood of family shops rather than a display for visitors, and follow the smells rather than a list. There will be things to taste along the way, offered freely by the people who make them: sashimi sliced to order, right in front of you, wagyu seared or fried right at the counter, a piece of fresh fruit wrapped in rice cake, made at the same counter where you're standing. Anything you decide to buy is entirely up to you and at your own pace. Further along, we stop where a family has been forging kitchen knives for four hundred years; ask, and they may engrave your name into the blade while you wait.

By mid-morning we reach the inner market halls, where the professionals do their own buying. The same fish, the same suppliers, the same standards that stock the finest kitchens in Tokyo are open now to anyone willing to walk in, look closely, and buy something if it catches your eye.

We finish at Namiyoke Shrine, the market's guardian. According to the story, something drifted ashore during the reclamation of this land and calmed the waves enough to let the work continue; the shrine has stood here ever since. It is a quiet place to end a morning that has been anything but quiet.

From the shrine we walk you toward Ginza, and the change happens almost immediately: narrow lanes give way to wide avenues, family counters to flagship windows, within the length of a single walk. That contrast, old Tsukiji and the polished, modern Ginza of today, standing close enough to reach on foot, is really what this morning is about. We say goodbye there, right as Ginza is opening for the day.

In Their Own Words

RSA's private Tokyo tours are rated 5.0 out of 5 across 96 guest reviews.

"Taka is an amazing guide and wonderful person. She personalized our 11 hour layover perfectly to accommodate our luggage, desires to get a taste of Tokyo, shopping, and timeline. She went above and beyond to call stores ahead and even place items on hold for us. During the tour she was flexible and adaptive to our needs and requests to change the tour. It could not have been more smooth, personalized, or enjoyable. We HIGHLY recommend Taka for any visit to Tokyo!"

"We toured Tokyo with Taka, and she made us feel comfortable from the moment she met us in our hotel lobby. She thoughtfully tailored the tour to match our interests and was very knowledgeable about culture and religion. We had a truly pleasant time with her."
